Eating Words - my personal highlight!

On Sunday's you can usually find me in my fleecy, squirrel pyjama bottoms declaring anything but pjs "outside clothes" that are not getting worn that day. I would usually be hunkered down on the sofa with a coffee and making breakfast at around midday- perhaps eggs on toast, perhaps porridge with a melting chocolate Lindtt bunny in it. But not last Saturday. Last Saturday you would have found me at the Penylan Pantry, sipping black coffee, nibbling on the most exquisite walnut brownie waiting in the warmth for Penny Simpson to start her reading.

Penny is a petite woman with a gentle, captivating voice. 'Eating Words' was a brilliantly mesmerising selection of extract from Penny's short stories and prose. She is an award-winning author and it's easy to see why. Penny used food to link the stories and talked about the inspiration it gave to each piece. From Berlin in the 20's, to overheard conversations in Roath, Penny paints vivid images of silver helium balloons bursting into the stars and a recovering heroin addict wrapping herself in a fur coat, intimidated by a strangers smile. Each of her extracts was packed with moreish descriptions that give the comfort of food.
Stood amongst the other festival goers, listening to her, I had the overwhelming urge to write. The type of author who inspires you to write is worth getting out of your pyjamas for.

For me, 'Eating Word's was a highlight of made in Roath.
